M12.9 Climate Change

I think the most troubling aspect of climate change is the rising water levels due to the ice caps melting as a result of increasing temperatures. This is would have a huge ecological effect since the environment of many living beings living near a coast or at really low altitudes could be affected including humans. In cities like San Francisco, where a big portion of the land mass lies lower than 6 feet above sea level, even the slightest rise in sea levels becomes a threat. Visualizing such a scenario would be helpful for someone who's never heard about climate change to understand it. Clearly explaining the dangers that climate change poses will guarantee the person's concern about this very real danger.

    Yes, I agree. Rising water is going to be a HUGE problem in the future that I think we will see before we move on. I think cities that build up now will win in the end but by building more. Problem is we will most likely move inland taking up more land that is currently open and free land for natural animals. Dan

After inputting this in the scorecard.org website, it provided the following information about Contra Costa county: Who and what are the top polluters in your zip code? Shell, Tesoro Refining, and Chevron are the top three polluters in Contra Costa county, each with around 1 million pounds of pollution released. What percent of the homes in your zip code have lead-based paint? 1% of houses in Contra Costa county are at high risk for lead hazard. M2.2 Personal Care Products

For this assignment, I decided to look up the shampoo and deodorant I use on the Safe Cosmetics Database website. The results were surprising, as both of these products actually had moderate overall hazard scores (5 and 3, respectively), while I was hoping they would have low scores. There is a high concern for the fragrance in my deodorant, Old Spice Red Zone Collection Pure Sport, that could cause allergies, irritation, organ system toxicity, and ecotoxicology. The real surprise came when I looked up my shampoo, Dove Men+Care 2in1 Formula Fresh & Clean. This product, like the deodorant, has the same fragrance component, but additionally, it contains the chemical DMDM Hydantoin, which is a known formaldehyde releaser, and has a hazard score of 7 alone.
