M7.7 Agencies' Roles

Image result for united states forest serviceFor this post, I chose the United States Forest Service. According to their website, they manage 154 national forests in the United States and Puerto Rico. Also, they have the biggest forestry research organization. On their website, they state their mission to be to "sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the nation's forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations". The United States Forest Service oversees the maintenance and safety of national forests and grasslands that provide 20% of the United States clean water supply, so their impact on environmental health is a great one, since a big chunk of the American population depends on it for clean and safe water.

    Hi Hugo,
    I did not know that US Forest Service has an impact to our water supply. From the name, I would assume the agency only oversees national forests. I would be interested in learning how the forests and grasslands provide water for us.

    Very interesting. I too did not know about the water supply. It makes sense since the water supply from mountain ranges passes through territory managed by the USFS.

M7.8 Topic of Interest: Radiation Exposure in Medical Imaging

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has a branch dedicated to radiation safety called Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH). This division has radiation safety programs that enforce requirements and encourage the safe use of radiation-emitting devices. These programs' goals are to keep professionals and the public informed about the risks of radiation exposure as well as ways to reduce such exposure and thus reduce the health risks associated with it. They do this by making sure that manufacturers make safe products, that users are educated about how to safely use devices that emit radiation, that users are educated about the risks of radiation exposure, and that regulators are able to obtain appropriate information about the use of such devices.

M4.5 Think about it

In order to reduce exposure to fragrances at work or at school, a marketing campaign could be put in place to discourage the use of fragrances at these locations. Posters and flyers could be distributed to spread the educational information of the adverse health effects of the chemicals in fragrances. Different cleaning requirements could be implemented so that scents are not able to stick on surfaces for too long. Installing good ventilation systems or designing buildings to have better natural ventilation could reduce the exposure to these harmful chemicals. As shown on one of our previous blog assignments, the fragrance component of many personal care products is usually the most harmful chemical in them, so reducing the use of these products (or encouraging the use of safer products instead) will have a great effect in diminishing the exposure to them.
