M2.3 Household Products

For this assignment, I looked up my dishwashing soap (Gain Ultra Original Scent) and my air freshener (Glade Spray Hawaiian Breeze). The air freshener spray has an overall health rating of 1, meaning that it has a slight health risk, and a reactivity score of 0, meaning that it has minimal reactivity. What caught my attention about this product is that under the carcinogenicity rubric, it reported that the manufacturer did not state whether there are carcinogenic agents among the ingredients of the product. For the dishwasher soap, what surprised me was that there is virtually no information on the potential risks of the chemical ingredients of this product. Apart from the warnings for physical contact exposure to the product, there is no other information on whether the components are carcinogens or potential carcinogens. It doesn't make much sense to me that products like this can be released for sale to the public without having much information on the effects of their components on the environment and the users themselves. As with the self-care products from the previous assignment, this is definitely something that should be regulated and enforced to aid the public in making conscious decisions when purchasing these products.

  1. Hi Hugo,
I was expecting the air freshener to have a higher score than one because I thought artificially made fragrances would contain harmful chemicals. You right that it doesn't make sense for products to be sold without full disclosure of its ingredients. This should be a cue for the government, who has the duty to protect our public health, to have policies addressing that issue.

  2. Hi,
A little disheartening to learn there is almost no carcinogenic information for a soap millions of people use. Scary in fact. This tells me the company is afraid to publish the results which could impact sales. Terrible.
